Phi Theta Kappa

Monday I was officially inducted to Phi Theta Kappa. To qualify for this you must have a GPA of at least 3.5, and I did!! Phi Theta Kappa focuses on helping out the campus and community. Phi Theta Kappa also celebrates our great academic accomplishments. To be formally inducted we had to sign our name in the book, light a candle and receive two white flowers. One white flower is from them to us, and the other we were suppose to give it to someone who meant a lot in our journey. Because I was unable to physically give one I thought it would be a good idea to take a picture of it. I choose to give mine to mom. She has always been there for me whenever I wanted or needed you. I love you so much. You are the best!
Phi Theta Kappa offers many great opportunities such as, scholarships, and letters of recommendation. When I graduate I will wear a gold sash with the Phi Theta Kappa symbol, and my name will be announced Brittany Meyer Phi Theta Kappa.

Chemistry

I knew on Monday I was going to have a chem test. So, once again, I made flash cards for myself. Whenever I would have spare time I would pull them out and study them. This method of studying helps me tremendously!! When Monday came around I was confident that I was going to do very well on the test. That is until my teacher handed me the test. It was seven pages long! At first I was really freaked out. I started to question how much I had studied. Once I looked over the test I realised that it wasn't that bad. It was actually missing some stuff that we did. I think I did very well. However, after I turned it in I realized that I had made stupid little mistakes a couple times. I hate it when that happens!! Oh, well all is good. The ones I goofed on were only worth one or two point compared to the ones I know I got right which were worth eight points.

Hangin out with Jordan

So, for those of you who don't know Jordan is like my best friend. She lives in Reedsport. We are both working and going to college. Recently we have not been able to hang out very often. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we have lunch together, but if you know Jordan and I an hour is definitely not enough time to even finish one conversation!! Today our math class got canceled, and we both had nothing to do. We immediately decided with out hesitation that we should hang out. First we went to the mall and went shopping. Then we treated ourselves to Orange Julious. After that we decided we wanted to go tanning. After that it was already almost 3:30. Jordan had set up an appointment to get her eyebrows waxed, so we went and did that too. We had so much fun, just hangin out, and being goofy. We need to do that more often. I'm so glad math class was canceled today!!

Friday the 13Th

So, apparently what they say about Friday the 13th is not real. OK I have always known that, but today proves it. I had a chem quiz today. It was so easy! It made me happy. Although, the chem class I'm in is half organic half bio so I made a little dumb mistake that I knew better. I was asked to name the general name for a monosacchride. Of course, I went through one problem to fast. I said one was aldobutose when it was suppose to be an aldotetose! The prefix but means four in organic chem, but the prefix tet means four in bio chem. (which is what we are studying now.) oops! the teacher had a typo on the quiz too. She gave us a ring form of a monosacchride and we were suppose to name it. The only problem was that one certain one she gave us was not one the four most common monosacchrides, which are D-glucose, D-galactose, D-fructose and D-ribose. All in all the quiz went well.....as far as I know we wont be able to get them back until Tuesday.

I have to work valentines day so Tim and I planned on going out to eat. However he has been so busy with getting this Honda done he wasn't able to pull away. So I brought Chinese home for dinner. That is our favorite!! In between panting sessions we were able to enjoy dinner and just relax. Tim has this really old book that teaches you how to fold a dollar bill into many different things. We decided to try to create a frog. This did not work AT ALL!! The dollar bill we had was WAY to old, so it did not fold that great. After awhile we decided that we would try again later with a new crisp dollar. In retrospect Friday the 13th is not bad.

Ready for Bed

I just got off work. I am so ready for bed, but for some reason I felt like blogging first. Work sucked today. Our freezer wasnt working quite right, so a guy came and fixed it. For some reason he melted all the build up ice right into the freezer.(All over our food.) It was awhile before he could get it working right again. By the time I could get into it to clean it out all of the water that he had dumped had froze. He was nice about it, he called my boss to tell her what was going on and to see if I could get some help cleaning the freezer out. Of course, I wasnt granted that privalge. I cleaned that whole freezer out top to bottom. I didnt think my hands could get that cold! It took a long time for them to return to a normal color again! On top of that the lady who works graveyard(who I do not like that well) came in and was complaining about some soap suds in the sink, and some gravy in another sink that I had forgot about. It was hard not to say anything, but shut my mouth and cleaned it up. This took about a minute to do. Anyways, thank God im home now!! My bed has never felt more comftable!

Basketball

Last night after school I went to Tif's basketball game. Of course, the gym was jammed packed. We were playing Coquille.(our arch rivals!) At first the girls did not play to their potential. Coquille was never ahead by a lot, but I could still clearly see that their coach, Marty Stallard, was definitely not happy! All turned out well though, after the half, and probably a HUGE lecture, the girls put their game faces on. Before we knew it we had about a twenty point lead. And it stayed that way until for the rest of the game. The boy's game was so nerve racking. Throughout the whole game there was horrible calls and T's thrown everywhere. One time the ref called a foul on Willy Looney and he wasn't even anywhere near the kid!! That had the whole gym yelling because that would make it his 5Th foul. MP was screaming and booing, while our couch was challenging the ref. All of Coquille was hollering too, they a T shape with their hands and called out "Technical!!" I didn't think it could get that loud in the gym. In the long run it worked out well for us. Ryan made a basket right at the last second, making it 62-61! Bobcats win! Everyone including the audience runs out into the middle of the court in pure glory. What an exciting game!!
After all that excitement I still had lots of homework to do. So when I got home I immediately started my rough draft for writing that is due on Monday. I knew that I do not have a lot of time to get it done because I have to work today and tomorrow. So I stayed up to 1:00 in the morning working on it. I actually should read it over, that late at night it is hard to tell what I might have accidentally said. well it's back to homework for me. My ethics mid term is also due!!

More Change

Tim graduated in 2003 from Coquille. He wanted to go to an out of state technical school, however he came up just a little bit short money wise. when that happened he had decided just to join the work force so that is what he did. Over the past years he has worked at several different jobs like the mill and at Pete's body shop. He is currently working at a granite place. He likes it there, although with the economy being so bad he is starting to feel the financial pinch.(like we all are) Recently he has mentioned going back to school, but he is not sure that he would be able to. I always tell him he can do whatever he sets his mind to. Yesterday he asked me to pick up some papers about the welding school at socc. So I did. I think is wanting to so bad!! Hopefully we can work things out so he can. Pray that all works out well.

Catch Up

This picture is extremely old. Look how little aaron is!! This was the only picture I could find of courtney. It may be old, but I think this picture is way cute. It has been so long since we have saw here. Courtney and I have just recently started talking again. It was nice to catch up! We both agreed that it is past time for Courtney to take a trip down here. I understand it is very hard to make time. I know this from experience. Congrats to Courtney and Theo on their engagement!! I have to cut this short I have to start headed out for another drive to Cb for class.

For Aunt Terry

For my ethics class I am currently in we have to do a news article every other week. The news articls has to be about some kind of moral or ethical issue. This week the article I chose to do was about a perfectly fertile woman requested fertility drugs so she could have multiples. Her reasoning was having multiples would be more convenient for her career!! Of course I thought of aunt Terry and the girls. Tell me, is having multiples convenient?? From what I hear it is most definitely not. Do not get me wrong the babies are a huge blessing, but not convenient. Also, I would hate to see how many babies would have. Frankly, it was hard not to laugh when I read that. Im sure Terry and Josh will agree with me.

B+ Material

So, my writing teacher for this semester is a little strange. She is a complete hippie!! She intimidates me too. She does not do very good job of explaining the type of essay she wants us to write about, and when anybody asks for clarity she gets defensive and says "I not the one writing the essay!" Our first essay topic we were suppose to write about was competition. Before she handed our papers back she made a HUGE discussion on how appalled she was when she read them. She informed us that must of the students had achieved D's and F's. In my mind I was freaking out. I just knew that my paper, that I worked so hard on, would be one of them. When she called my name to retrieve the paper my heart sank. I grabbed it out of her hands and began going looking over it. She had a lot written on the papers. And there it was, on the last page, my grade. My paper was B+ material. I was so relieved!! So here it is......

Competition

In Alfie Kohn’s essay No -Win Situations he believes that competition is not a good thing. In fact he states that competition can cause “psychological problems (pg51) and “toxic relationships” (pg52). I can see how competition, if it is extreme, can cause problems. However I believe that competition, at its best, builds important characteristics that are vital for our society today. The three characteristics of competition are setting goals, building self-image and fine-tuning skills.
First, competition can create an inner drive in a person. This means that the person will set goals to help meet that drive. Sometimes when achieving that goal people will do things that are not directly related to their goal, but in the long run will allow them to excel. An example would be a person wanting to have an average of ten points per game. To accomplish this he/she will have to have good grades to be eligible to play. In addition the person will have to be completely dedicated to practicing long and hard. If both of these are done it won’t be long before this goal is achieved, and a new one will be set.
Competition also creates a sense of self-image. While goals are continued to be made and met the person starts to feel proud of his/her accomplishments. Eventually the person will develop a routine of exceeding goals and then continue to create new goals. To win, players cannot come into a game with the idea that the team will lose. Being competitive provides a person with an “I can do this” attitude. This attitude is not only a key for a victory for Friday night’s game, but also a victory for life. A good self-image creates an “I can do this” attitude, which provides a positive outlook on life.
Finally competition builds many different skills. The skill of team work is taught by competition. Because a team has the common interest of winning, this means the team must learn how to work together so they can win. Team work can be applied to more than just a sport teams, but it could be applied to several jobs. For example the hospital staff must work together to save or heal a sick patient. Another example could be the president of the United States. To earn that title he had to convince people that he is the right man for that responsibility. To do this he has to have a committee to work together to help campaign for him.
In addition to team work competition also builds personal skills. Personal skills can be anything from learning how to cook or to speak a different language. Having more personal skills can positively affect someone’s life. Competition also builds more confidence. When a person has more confidence they are more willing to try something that they might have wanted to for awhile. These skills build even more confidence and a sense of achievement. He/she feels that they have done well in all of their goals. The skills they have learned from being competitive can be used in sports and any other situations, such as school, jobs, scholarships, and many more life activities.
Competition at its best teaches us how to set goals, have a positive self-image and to how to fine tune important skills. Without these qualities our society today would not function properly. Being competitive pushes a person to be and do better. If there was not competition then people would not push themselves to improve. Where would our society be if we were to never improve?

Time Flies

When I was in high school my friend Brandi and I were always involved in every school event. And I mean everything! We planned conferences for leadership, we were on the catering team, cheer leading team, dance community, golf team, assembly committee, anything there was we did it. We never were just half involved either. We ALWAYS went all out!! This lovely picture proves that. It was taken during spirit week. Can you guess what day it was? Yep that right it was bum day. It is memories like these that have gotten me thinking recently. That's all they are now are memories. I can't believe it is over. It went by so fast. It is true what they say...Time really does fly when your having fun!!!
Things are changing so very fast. I am already half way through my first year of college. In that little amount of time I have saw change working. My step-brother is now married and has a little girl. My friend Levi also has a little girl now as well, he will be married on valentines day. (how sweet) I have also recently found out that my step-sister is also going to get married, and Brandi, the one in the picture, she is engaged to a marine. Putting all the marriages aside both my mom, step-mom and I are all in college. My Aunt Terry had gorgous quadruplet girls, and Aunty Sara is expecting another strong baby boy. All of this has happened in as little time as a year. I wonder what the future will bring?

A Bit of Relief

Tuesdays are a short day for my class wise. I only have my math class and that gets out at 1:50. That makes Tuesdays a perfect work day. I work swing every Tuesday, so of course this Tuesday wouldnt be any different. Except when I got to work today I checked the scheduale like I do every time I come into to work.(Even if I have already saw the scheduale before.) It is like a habit for me. This time for once I was actually happy after looking. You see my boss Dianna had all of next months written down and I am not schedualed to work one graveyard. When I saw this I wanted to jump up and down with joy!! You see ever since I have started working graveyard there is always some kind of an unpleasant event that occurs. Wether it be drunks, creepy guys hitting on, or me having to call the police. Thank God I dont have to deal with that for at least a month anyways. Im sure my family will be thrilled to hear this news as much as I was!

Family Love

It seems to me that my family has recently acquired a love for blogging. It all started when my Terry started her blog about her four beautiful baby girls. Since than my other aunt has started one of her own and has convinced my mother and I to also start one for ourselves. At first I was reluctant because I didnt know what I would blog about. Then it came to me. I could blog about life in college! So here I am.

I am attending Southwestern Oregon Communtity College. I live in Myrtle Point so I drive back and forth to school. Let me tell you it gets tiring! Exspecially recently my teachers have been cancling my classes without telling us. So I show up to class but there is know teacher. This has happened about five times within the past two weeks, and frankly im tired of it. Oh well, although it costs me more in gas money it gives me more studying time.

I also work at the high way deli mart to pay for my gas expensenses. Although I know I am lucky to have a job during these hard times for our economy I am so over working there. The way I look at it is it is more instentive to get my nursing degree!! Thank you highway deli!
